Using Mentor Texts to Teach Writing
Using mentor texts to teach writing is not a new concept, but it is one that is gaining momentum in classrooms. When students read texts which model particular aspects of good writing, they become more comfortable using these strategies in their own writing. Model texts allow teachers to hone in on one particular skill they wish to strengthen in student writing without overwhelming students with so much information that they are unable to process and apply it. For more information about using mentor texts (at the elementary, middle, and high school levels), I highly recommend reading Wondrous Words by Katie Wood Ray.
